SmashUp Badminton or Badminton with coaching (Satellite Club associated with Harborough LC Junior Badminton Club)

Wednesdays | 16:00 - 17:00 | Main Sports Hall.

Harborough LC Junior Badminton Club is running a “Satellite Club” which will offer the opportunity to either take part in (i) SmashUp badminton or (ii) Badminton for those who wish to receive coaching in addition to playing games. The choice is yours as courts will be made available to meet the weekly attendance preference.

(i) What is SmashUp

SmashUp! is a brand new after school badminton initiative by BADMINTON England, and backed by Sport England and the Youth Sports Trust, aimed at encouraging non sporty /semi sporty 11-17 year olds to get active on a badminton court but in a highly social, relaxed session where “being good” at sport is not a requirement.

SmashUp! offers different activities, all based on a badminton court and with a racket in hand, that allows pupils of all ability to enjoy their court time, playing amongst friends and different year groups at a pace that they set.

Drop in? after-school badminton

What makes SmashUp! different to PE or other after school badminton clubs?

SmashUp! is made up of on court activities that are focused on social aspects of the game and interaction as well as being about fun and “bragging rights? amongst friends rather than traditional skills development or coaching.

Pupils can select which activities take place on the courts from a selection offered by BADMINTON England whilst there is a session leader (activator) on hand to inspire and motivate the pupils but not provide coaching tips.

Music could also be played out within the sports hall and would then feature music tracks supplied by the pupils using their own MP3, tablet or mobile phones.

Pupils can also step off court for text breaks, check facebook or chat with friends if they choose without disrupting the gameplay.

(ii) Badminton with coaching

Within each weekly one hour session an average of 15 to 30 minutes will be spent on Technical & Tactical Skills. The weekly programme will follow the same as the main club details for the 5:00 to 6:00pm sessions. This will be followed by a mixture of Singles & Doubles ladders, Fun & Conditioned games. Within each week the tasks will be adjusted on the respective courts to reflect the needs of all players’ abilities (i.e. Beginner / intermediate).

From 31st August 2016 the current intent is really to extend this 4-5pm session for those who want to receive badminton coaching to be part of the main club. The coaching would follow the programme of the 5:00 to 6:00pm session as indicated under the details for the main club. This would mean (i) the costs would be based on the number of weeks in a term @ £3.50 per week plus a one-off £5.00 Badminton England Junior Club affiliation fee for season 2016/17. The payments would be by monthly standing order of £13.00 from September 2016 to July 2017. (ii) Opportunity to purchase club shirts / shorts or skorts; (iii) Opportunity to take part in club tournament events and (iv) Opportunity to take part in external tournaments.

SmashUp Badminton would remain as just turn up any week and pay £3.50 weekly to play

These sessions are for aged 8-17 (school years 3 to 12).

For either selection (i) or (ii) the times are the same.

Harborough LC Junior Badminton Club

Wednesdays | 17:00 - 18:00 & 18:00 – 19:00 | Main Sports Hall - 4 courts.

We are the only Junior Badminton club in the Market Harborough area available for players from aged 8 to under 17 (as classified by the criteria for school year 12) regardless of previous experience or ability. We offer structured sessions for learning and fun too! Members are invited to play in external tournaments when appropriate. We are affiliated to Badminton England (JNR/1403), and follow their guidance in our code of conduct for young people and other policies. With a Constitution, Code of Conducts & Welcome Leaflets the club received on 10th May 2016 renewal accreditation as a Badminton England Premier Club and Sport England Clubmark. Joint ventures between Harborough District Council and the club on "Sportivate", a "Satellite Club" and "Try a Sport" projects have introduced badminton into the community.

These projects also continue to help to have new members join the weekly Wednesday night 5:00 to 6:00pm & 6:00 to 7:00pm sessions. With level 1 and 2 coaches plus adult volunteers in attendance the four courts at Harborough Leisure Centre are now used by players of beginner and intermediate ability levels. A competition by members to design a club badge and select a shirt colour means they now have their own distinctive club shirt, shorts & skorts

For the new season 2016/17 the club will have two badminton sessions. The 5:00 to 6:00pm sessions is currently aimed at aged 8 to 14 years (school years 3 to 9 only) and the 6:00 to 7:00pm session aimed at aged 14 to 17 years (school years 10 to 12 only). Dependant on numbers players aged 12 and 13 years (from school years 8 & 9) would be accepted to the 6:00 to 7:00pm session based on their playing ability. We will operate a waiting list for both sessions when applicable. Over the next year, the club's strategy will be to also work with local Junior Schools to give younger children a taste and fun of the sport that hopefully means more weekly sessions are required at appropriate age groups (and ability) to meet the demand and age groups of all club members. All members will be requested to pay the one-off £5.00 Club England Junior Badminton Registration Affiliation Fee for 2016/17 season. The total respective 2016/17 term costs for the 5:00 to 6:00pm sessions are based on £3.50 per session x number of weeks and the 6:00 to 7:00pm sessions are based on £3.50 per session x number of weeks. We will operate a monthly standing order payment system that will be 11 monthly payments of £13.00 (September 2016 to July 2017) which includes the Club England Junior Badminton affiliation fee and £1.50 for club tournament events entrance fee. There will be no refund for non-attendance.

  • All weeks will include an element in respect of Preparing to Play activities, Single & Double Ladders, Fun & Conditioned Games
  • Within each week the tasks will be adjusted on the various courts to reflect the needs of all the players' abilities (i.e. beginner / intermediate).
  • The Six Sigma method of DMAIC (i.e. Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control) will be used at various stages over the weeks in relation to a selected range of shot skills by using Yonex 300 shuttles of both medium & fast speeds or Feather shuttles.
  • A BKL Automatic Shuttlecock Launcher will also be available to be used.
  • The FocusX2 analysis software programme tool using captured video footage of the players movements will also be used at various stages over the Autumn, Spring & Summer Terms to help improve players technical & tactical skills.
  • This would only apply when permission for the young person had been given on the enrolment form to be filmed or photographed during any coaching / club session.
