The future of fitness arrives at the refurbished Harborough Leisure Centre

Finally, a chance to be 10 years younger without a time machine

It looks like a Dalek, but it’s a lot less scary and the new Boditrax machine at Harborough Leisure Centre is already helping the centre’s members see how healthy they really are.

Harborough Leisure Centre members get use of Boditrax free as part of their memberships and it’s proving a popular addition to the centre’s health and fitness offering. With the £100,000 recently invested in a new gym, plus a refurbished swimming pool, now’s an exciting time to be a leisure centre member.

The simplicity of the boditrax machine is proving popular – just step on it, hold the handles and you’re off. Half a minute later, members get a full body run down covering important stuff like their weight and body mass index (BMI).

Weight and BMI, you can get from loads of sources, of course. Where Boditrax really comes into its own is with metrics like how much muscle is in each arm or leg, how much fat is in certain parts of the body and most popular of all – the member’s metabolic age. No need to go Back to the Future to take 10 years off your age.

The metabolic age is the one that counts. And if a member gets an age they don’t like the look of, at least with Boditrax, they can start doing something about it! The machine helps people set goals and track progress, like having a personal trainer, who never misses an appointment.

Justin Butlin, Contract Manager for the Harborough District Leisure Trust said: “Boditrax is a great addition to what we’re offering here at Harborough. When I first had a go on the machine, I couldn’t believe the level of detail it went into. It told me stuff I knew, and plenty that was a real eye-opener. People here seem to like it, which is what it’s all about really.

We think it’s a great tool for keeping people motivated with their fitness – so we’ve made it free as part of memberships. Add in the new gym and refurbished swimming pool, and we feel we’ve now got the full health and fitness package for the communities we serve.’

Clive Grafton-Reed, Chair of Harborough District Leisure Trust said “Boditrax is another innovation that members can benefit from in our Leisure Centres in Market Harborough and Lutterworth. One of our goals is getting more people to be active and enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle so anything which helps people to achieve that has to be welcomed. I hope people will give it a go to see what it can do for them.”

‘Harborough Hoist’ making it easier for disabled people to enjoy swimming

Acting on impassioned customer feedback, and following a consultation, the Harborough District Leisure Trust has now refurbished the changing facilities for disabled people at the Harborough Leisure Centre pool, which it runs.

In the world of social media, it can sometimes seem like everyone’s shouting so no-one’s listening. Getting your voice heard can seem like a daunting task, but parent Kyra Williams managed to get hers not only listened to but acted upon.

In Spring last year, Kyra took her disabled daughter, Molly swimming at Harborough Leisure Centre’s pool. Swimming is one of Molly’s favourite things, but Kyra felt the changing facilities were in no way accessible and made her voice heard on Facebook gathering support with each new post.

After being informed of the feedback and campaign building around it, the Harborough District Leisure Trust, which runs the leisure centres, sat down with Kyra to see what could be done. The Trust had been assured that its facilities complied with necessary guidelines, but Kyra’s feedback resulted in a consultation and a series of changes being suggested.

All changes are now in place. The largest of these has been the installation of a £3000 hoist in the disabled changing room that allows more people to use and enjoy the pool, by helping them change in comfort with all necessary disability aids, funded by the Leisure Trust.

Kyra Williams commented: After approaching Market Harborough Leisure Centre with the problem a 'rise and fall' change bed and hoist have been fitted. Both Molly and myself are absolutely thrilled to have been listened to. We no longer have to change her on the floor and I don't have to lift a heavy child. I hope that many more disabled users and carers can now enjoy the facilities as we do.

Trust Chair, Clive Grafton Reed confirmed: The ‘Harborough Hoist’ is now up and running along with the electric shower bed, and is already proving itself a worthwhile addition to the centre’s facilities.  As part of our Community strategy, the Trust are committed to making the residents of the Harborough District, more active, more often by removing barriers to entry.

Harborough District Councillor, Barbara Johnson had this to say about the positive changes:

'Last year, Mrs Williams raised concerns about the inadequate changing facilities for Molly and other children with disabilities.

I'm pleased that facilities are now appropriate and no longer present challenges for the children and those accompanying them. It was good to discuss and investigate options with staff, and to finally get a satisfactory resolution to the issues.

Harborough Triathlon

Plans have just been unveiled for a new triathlon that will be based in Market Harborough that is taking place at the leisure centre on the afternoon of Sunday September 7th.

The Archway House Harborough Triathlon will comprise 2 events – a ‘Try and Tri’ event for people who want to find out what a triathlon might be a like and a ‘sprint’ event for those who are more confident in their swimming, cycling and running abilities.  For both events there is also a relay option – where entrants can split the sports declines between 3 people so that one person runs, one cycles and the other sprints.

The event is the idea of Amy Handford and Brian Corcoran both members of the leisure centre and , both keen triathletes who live in the area and have long dreamed of bringing the event to the town. “We are so excited to see the event coming together and hope that lots of people might use it as an opportunity to try out a triathlon for the first time” says Amy.
The Archway House Harborough triathlon will be based on the site of the Harborough Leisure Centre where the swim sessions will take place. It is hoped up to 300 people will take part at the event from 2pm onwards on September 7th.

In addition Archway House, the events main sponsor will be running special sports massage and stretching classes for participants. “We are delighted to be supporting this event and hope that lots of people locally will use it as a way of getting active and perhaps trying out a triathlon for the first time” comments Archway House owner Alec Welton.

More details of the event are on www.archwayhouse.co.uk.

The triathlon movement has caught the imagination of the British public, helped by the 2012 British Olympic champions Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, who won gold and bronze medals respectively.  Even before boost to the sport from the Brownlee brothers membership of British Triathlon grew by over 50% between 2007 and 2011.

See our events page for specific information.
